World Environmental Day

The National Capital District Commission (NCDC) organized a World Environment Day event in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, which included a mangrove planting demonstration at Beach side, Kanudi , Napapa Road. The event aimed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of World Environment Day globally.

To commemorate World Environment Day, Geogas PNG staff, in collaboration with the National Capital District Commission (NCDC), and students from Baruni and Hagara schools, participated in a significant mangrove planting program. This event not only highlighted our commitment to environmental stewardship but also showcased the vital role of the younger generation, now aptly named the restoration generation.

NCDC  donated seedlings consisting of 7 different tree species suitable for Port Moresby’s soils.

A total of 100 mangrove seedlings, comprising seven native species, were planted to improve mangrove ecosystems essential for biodiversity, natural storm surge protection, and carbon sequestration.

The mangrove planting was part of NCDC’s objective to plant 1 million trees around Port Moresby in the next 10 years, which aligns with Papua LNG’s Zero Net Deforestation (ZND) objectives. NCDC is committed to educating future generations about the importance of a clean and green society through school curriculums and encouraging city residents to join in protecting Mother Nature and the Earth we live in.

We are also proud to announce that Geogas PNG is now a partner in the Local Marine Area Rehabilitation, a program overseen by the Conservation Environment Protection Authority (CEPA) and NCDC. Together, we will continue to work towards preserving and restoring our precious marine environments.
